Brain training using real-time fMRI for hearing voices in schizophrenia

This trial tests whether real-time brain imaging “neurofeedback” can help people with schizophrenia who have ongoing auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) that haven’t improved with medications. If you qualify, you may complete brain-scanning sessions where you practice changing brain activity while being monitored.

Who can take part

  • You have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (based on DSM-5 criteria).
  • You have auditory hallucinations that have not responded to medication, confirmed by your records and a structured interview.
  • You do not have a major neurologic illness.
  • You have not had major head injury or recent serious brain trauma.
  • You have not had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
  • Your verbal IQ is 70 or higher (they may screen for this).
