Who can take part
- Be 22 to 70 years old and not currently pregnant
- Have a current major depressive episode for at least 24 months (or at least 2 episodes total, with the current one over 12 months)
- Have “treatment-resistant” depression—at least 4 adequate antidepressant treatments tried from at least 2 different types, but the depression did not fully improve
- Have significant depression symptoms during screening (HDRS-17 score 20+ on two checks) and one week before surgery (MADRS 27+)
- Be willing to have brain MRI checks and sign consent and a treatment contract, and you’ll need a support person at the consent discussion
- Be medically able to undergo the electrode surgery and meet safety checks (including no seizure history or high seizure risk, normal blood clotting tests, and safe blood pressure)
