Who can take part
- You recently had a stroke or TIA where symptoms lasted more than 24 hours (stroke) or less than 24 hours (TIA).
- Your brain scan (CT or MRI) must show new signs of stroke or “acute ischemia,” especially in the artery area that is narrowed.
- Your artery narrowing must be in specific brain vessels (intracranial carotid, middle cerebral, vertebral, or basilar); other locations like isolated posterior cerebral artery narrowing are excluded.
- Your narrowing must be moderate to severe (50% to 99%) based on a CTA scan that measures the percent blockage.
- You must be age 30 or older, and if you’re 30–49, you need evidence of atherosclerosis elsewhere or at least 2 stroke risk factors (like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or smoking).
- You must be able to have MRI, or you must not have any MRI safety issues (like pacemakers/defibrillators, certain implants, pregnancy, severe claustrophobia).
