Resistant potato starch for liver cirrhosis and confusion
Part of Brain & nervous system, Digestive system, Hormones & metabolism clinical trials.
This study is testing whether a special type of starch (resistant potato starch) can help people with cirrhosis who have had episodes of confusion from liver problems. It may help by changing the bacteria in your gut, which could reduce the risk of future confusion episodes.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You have been diagnosed with cirrhosis (scarring of the liver).
- You have had at least one episode of confusion or drowsiness caused by liver problems (overt hepatic encephalopathy) in the past year.
- You have not been in the hospital or taken antibiotics (except rifaximin) in the last 4 weeks.
- You have not taken lactulose, a medicine for liver-related confusion, in the last 4 weeks.
- You have not had more than one alcoholic drink per week or used any illicit drugs in the last month.

This trial compares two treatments—BCAA supplements and rifaximin—to see which is better at preventing another episode of confusion or coma in people with cirrhosis who have already had one. If you qualify, you would receive one of these treatments for several months.
This trial tests if a prebiotic supplement can improve gut health and PTSD symptoms in people with cirrhosis and PTSD. It aims to see if changing the gut microbiome can help both conditions.
This trial studies whether taking rifaximin plus lactulose can prevent a brain problem called hepatic encephalopathy (confusion) after TIPS, a procedure to reduce pressure in the liver. It may help people who are having TIPS planned and are at risk of this complication.
This trial tests if transferring healthy bacteria into your gut (fecal microbiota transplant) can help people who still get confusion episodes (hepatic encephalopathy) even after a TIPS procedure and while on standard medications like lactulose and rifaximin.
This trial tests whether transplanting healthy gut bacteria can help prevent confusion and brain problems caused by liver disease. You would receive either the bacteria treatment or standard medications to see if it reduces these episodes.
This trial tests whether taking a special potato starch daily can help remove resistant bacteria from your gut. It may lower the chance of future infections.
