- You are 18 or older
- You have ALS, or you carry an ALS-causing gene mutation without symptoms, or you are a healthy volunteer
- You do not have any active skin disease that would make a skin biopsy unsafe
- You are not allergic to lidocaine or prilocaine (numbing medicines)
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are willing to give written consent
