Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are in the ICU on a breathing machine (either a tube in your throat or a mask) that you will need for at least 24 hours.
  • Your ICU doctor has decided you need medicine to keep you calm and comfortable.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You do not have a history of certain brain or nerve conditions like schizophrenia, epilepsy, Parkinson's, or myasthenia gravis.
  • You do not have severe heart, liver, or kidney problems that would make this study unsafe.
