Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You had a large brain swelling from a traumatic injury, stroke, or brain bleed that required a special surgery to remove part of your skull (called a decompressive hemicraniectomy).
  • At least 4 weeks after that surgery, your surgeon checked the removed skull piece and said it is in good enough shape to be put back (Craniectomy Contour Class A or B).
  • Your doctors say you are healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia and another surgery.
  • You do not have an active infection (like pneumonia or a bladder infection) in the 6 to 8 weeks before the planned skull replacement.
  • You have not had an infection in your brain or at the surgical site since the skull removal.
