Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) because of a sudden brain injury, such as a stroke, bleeding in the brain, or a head injury.
- You are in or expected to be in an intensive care unit (ICU).
- You have had the breathing tube for less than 12 hours.
- You did not take antibiotics in the week before coming to the hospital and are not taking them now (except routine surgery antibiotics).
- You have no known allergy to the antibiotic ceftriaxone, are not pregnant, and are expected to survive beyond 90 days.
