Who can take part

  • Diagnosed with a disorder of consciousness (like coma or vegetative state) by a specialized exam (CRS-R).
  • Injury happened more than 28 days ago.
  • Medications for mood or behavior must be stable for 4 weeks before starting, and will stay stable during the study.
  • A family member or legal representative can give permission for the patient to join.
  • No other major brain conditions (like stroke or dementia) before the injury.
  • No metal implants or devices that would make MRI unsafe.
  • No continuous shaking or moving that would interfere with imaging.
  • Not currently in another clinical trial.
  • Not on a breathing machine (ventilator).
  • No skull surgery that removed a bone flap or a plastic patch over the left side of the head.
