This trial tests if a drug called dexmedetomidine works better than morphine to manage pain and discomfort in newborns who are undergoing cooling therapy after a brain injury at birth. It may help your baby be more comfortable during treatment.

Who can take part

  • Your baby must be at least 35 weeks gestational age at birth
  • Your baby's birth weight must be at least 2.5 kilograms (about 5.5 pounds)
  • Your baby must have had a lack of oxygen around the time of birth, proven by a blood test or a serious event during labor
  • Your baby must show signs of brain injury from lack of oxygen (called neonatal encephalopathy)
  • Cooling therapy must be started within 8 hours of your baby's life
  • Your baby cannot have known major brain or chromosome problems before birth
