This study tests whether methadone, a type of pain medicine, helps control pain better after knee replacement surgery. It is for people who have not used narcotics recently and are otherwise healthy.

Who can take part
- You are between 21 and 75 years old.
- You are having a total knee replacement on one knee (not both) at Colorado Joint Replacement.
- You have not used narcotic pain medication in the past 6 weeks, and you have no history of drug or alcohol abuse.
- You have not used tobacco in the last 90 days.
- You do not have sleep apnea, severe kidney or liver disease, severe COPD, or a BMI over 40.
- You are willing to use birth control (if you could become pregnant) and can stay in the hospital until you are able to go home (not to a rehab facility).
