Comparing two diabetes drugs' effect on early retinal changes

This study looks at how starting a GLP-1 receptor agonist (like Trulicity) or an SGLT2 inhibitor (like Jardiance) affects blood sugar and small blood vessels in the eyes of people with type 2 diabetes. If you have mild or no diabetic eye disease, you may be able to help researchers learn which medication might be better for your eyes.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older and have type 2 diabetes.
  • Your doctor has decided, on their own, to start you on a GLP-1 receptor agonist or an SGLT2 inhibitor for the first time.
  • Your eye exam shows either no diabetic eye damage or only a mild form of it.
  • Your HbA1c is 7.0% or higher within 30 days of your eye check.
  • You can have clear eye scans and follow-up visits.
  • You have not taken either study drug before and do not have other serious eye conditions.
