Deep brain stimulation for severe trigeminal nerve pain

This trial tests whether deep brain stimulation can reduce intense facial pain from trigeminal neuralgia when medicines and prior procedures have not helped. You may be eligible if you’re an adult with a specific MRI finding near the trigeminal nerve pathway.

Who can take part

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • Your trigeminal neuralgia pain has not improved despite trying at least 3 medications
  • You must have already tried at least two prior “nerve lesion” procedures (such as radiosurgery, percutaneous rhizotomy, or open rhizotomy)
  • Your MRI must show a pontine (brainstem) lesion that is touching the trigeminal nerve pathway
  • You must be able to safely have an MRI scan
  • There must be no medical reason you cannot have the deep brain stimulation procedure
