Who can take part
- Your child must have sickle cell disease type HbSS or HbSB0 (confirmed by a blood test).
- Your child must be between 5 and 12 years old (up to their 13th birthday).
- Your child must have had a special ultrasound (TCD) showing high blood flow in the brain that puts them at risk for stroke.
- Your child must be able to swallow a whole capsule (hydroxyurea).
- Your child cannot have had a stroke or mini-stroke before, or be on other treatments like blood transfusions or hydroxyurea already.
- Your child must not have certain health problems (like low blood counts, kidney issues, seizures, or metal in the body that would make an MRI unsafe).
