Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are having heart surgery (like valve repair, bypass, or aortic surgery) and will go to the intensive care unit (ICU) afterward.
  • Your doctor expects you to be on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) for more than 6 hours after surgery.
  • You will need continuous sedation (medicine to keep you sleepy) while in the ICU.
  • You do not have a serious brain condition (like severe dementia or recent stroke).
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
