Hydrocortisone added during stress in people on low-dose prednisolone
Treatments studied
Part of Bones, joints & muscles, Brain & nervous system, Heart & circulation, Hormones & metabolism, Immune system & allergy, Skin clinical trials.
This study tests whether adding supplemental hydrocortisone during stressful events can prevent problems in people who develop adrenal insufficiency from long-term prednisolone. It is meant to see if “stress dosing” is safer and helps the body respond to stress.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You are age 50 or older
- You are a postmenopausal woman (a hormone blood test like FSH may be checked)
- You have been diagnosed with PMR, GCA, or both
- You have taken prednisolone for at least 12 weeks, and you are currently on 0–5 mg daily
- You have been on a dose of 5 mg per day or less for at least 2 weeks before screening

This trial tests whether hydrocortisone (a cortisol replacement) helps people who feel symptoms of adrenal insufficiency after they stop long-term prednisolone. It compares hydrocortisone versus placebo to see if symptoms improve and dosing is safer/effective.
This trial compares two medications, hydrocortisone and methylprednisolone, to see which works better for people whose adrenal glands have stopped working properly after taking high doses of steroids (methylprednisolone) for more than 4 weeks.
This study tests whether updated cortisol test numbers better identify adrenal insufficiency, a hormone condition where your body doesn’t make enough stress hormone. It may help doctors confirm the diagnosis and choose safer next steps for treatment.
This trial tests two different ways of making a liquid hydrocortisone medicine for children with adrenal gland problems. It looks at which one is easier to take and causes fewer side effects.
This study measures blood levels of high-dose steroid medicines (prednisolone or related steroids) to understand how the body processes them in different real-life situations. It may help improve how steroids are dosed and monitored for people needing short-term or longer-term anti-inflammatory treatment.
This Phase 3 trial tests whether giving hydrocortisone plus fludrocortisone to critically ill ICU patients with suspected “corticosteroid insufficiency” can improve outcomes without relying on steroids already being used. It may help patients whose bodies aren’t making enough stress hormones during severe illness.
